ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF WEIGHTS
Addition of Weights
To add two or more weights in grams or kilograms, we simply add the numbers and
write the unit.
Example 1: Add the following.
(a) 47 g + 39 g (b) 58 kg + 76 kg (c) 359 g + 268 g
Solution: (a) 1 (b) 1 1 (c) 1 1
4 7 g 5 8 kg 3 5 9 g
+ 3 9 g + 7 6 kg + 2 6 8 g
8 6 g 1 3 4 kg 6 2 7 g
Subtraction of Weights
To subtract given weights, we simply subtract the smaller weight (number) from
the bigger weight (number) and write the unit.
Example 2: Subtract the following.
(a) 85 g – 38 g (b) 72 kg – 39 kg (c) 820 g – 580 g
Solution: (a) 7 15 (b) 6 12 (c) 7 12
8 5 g 7 2 kg 8 2 0 g
– 3 8 g – 3 9 kg – 5 8 0 g
4 7 g 3 3 kg 2 4 0 g
Practice Time 9D
1. Add the following.
(a) 4 6 kg (b) 3 0 0 g (c) 1 0 5 kg (d) kg g
+ 3 4 kg + 2 0 0 g + 9 5 kg 2 3 2 7
+ 3 4 8 3
2. Subtract the following.
(a) 3 4 0 g (b) 6 2 4 g (c) 1 3 5 kg (d) kg g
– 2 0 0 g – 3 1 5 g – 4 8 kg 7 7 1 8
– 4 3 1 9
