Glass and spoon are non-standard units of measuring capacity.
Sometimes we also measure the capacity of one largest container in terms of other
smaller containers. For example, 1 pot of milk can be poured into 6 glasses. That
means, the capacity of a pot is same as the capacity of 6 glasses.

activity
l While taking a bath, fill the bucket/tub with water and count how many times you
filled your mug completely.
l Take a cup of sugar solution and fill the shells of ice tray kept in your freezer. How
many shells are filled with 1 cup of solution?
All these give us a rough idea of measurement not an accurate value.
Hence, we use the standard units to measure the capacity of liquid.
Standard Units of Capacity
We measure the quantity of liquid in litres and millilitres.
Millilitre
To measure small quantities of any liquid, we use millilitres (mL).
Litre
To measure large quantities of any liquid, we use
litres (L). Knowledge Desk
Saliva produced in our
mouth helps in
chewing and digestion
of food. Our mouth
produces about 1 L of
saliva in a day.
