              Glass and spoon are non-standard units of measuring capacity.

              Sometimes we also measure the capacity of one largest container in terms of other
              smaller containers. For example, 1 pot of milk can be poured into 6 glasses. That

              means, the capacity of a pot is same as the capacity of 6 glasses.

                l   While taking a bath, fill the bucket/tub with water and count how many times you
                    filled your mug completely.

                l   Take a cup of sugar solution and fill the shells of ice tray kept in your freezer. How
                    many shells are filled with 1 cup of solution?

              All these give us a rough idea of measurement not an accurate value.

              Hence, we use the standard units to measure the capacity of liquid.

              Standard Units of Capacity


              We measure the quantity of liquid in litres and millilitres.

              Millilitre


              To measure small quantities of any liquid, we use millilitres (mL).










              Litre

              To measure large quantities of any liquid, we use
