In the list, the number of lanterns is ‘less than’ the number of diyas.
That is, 85 < 240.
When ‘<’ is used between two numbers, that means number on
the left of the symbol is less than the number on the right of it.
Also, number of candles < Number of diyas
That is, 215 < 240.
Now, observe that the number of sweets is ‘more than’ the number
of lanterns.
That is, 155 > 85.
Also, number of glitter bulbs > Number of candles
That is, 315 > 215
When ‘>’ is used between two numbers, that means number on the left side of the
symbol is greater than the number on the right of it.
Rules for Comparing Numbers
When the Number of Digits are Different
A number with more number of digits is greater than the number with less
number of digits.
example 1: Compare 61 and 426.
Solution:
H T O A 3-digit number is greater
6 1 2-digit number than a 2-digit number.
4 2 6 3-digit number
So, 426 > 61 or 61 < 426
When the Number of digits are Same
When each of the given numbers is of 3 digits, then compare their hundreds
digits first.
example 2: Compare 534 and 769.
Solution:
H T O H T O The number with the greater digit
5 3 4 7 6 9 in the hundreds place is greater.
5 < 7
So, 534 < 769 or 769 > 534
