Subtracting a number from itself
When we subtract a number from itself, the difference is 0.

in India. Children are celebrating it as Kite Flying 6–1 17–0 16–9
Day. Some kites are flying in the sky. Each kite has a
subtraction problem. Solve the problems and observe 21–10 15–15
their answers. If the answer is 0, the kite will come
down, else it goes up.
Now, tell the number of kites:

Daisy and Bela need to colour the chart papers with different crayons. Daisy has
40 crayons. Bela takes away 13 crayons from Daisy and asks her how many crayons
are left.
Daisy calculates the remaining crayons in the following way.
Let us start from 40 and count 13 –1 –1 –1 –1 –1 –1 –1 –1 –1 –1 –1 –1 –1
steps backward. We reach at 27. 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40
Thus, 40 – 13 = 27.
Bela shows another way. As 13 = 10 + 3, so, starting from 40, take a jump of 1 ten.
Then move 3 steps backward.
Thus, 40 – 13 = 40 – 10 – 3 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40
= 30 – 3 = 27 –1 –1 –1
Hence, both find 27 crayons are left.
