ReGROUPING NUmBeRS FOR SUBTRACTION
Sometimes, there are not enough ones to subtract from. In such situations, we need
to regroup the numbers.
1 ten = 10 ones
= =
23 = 2 tens 3 ones = 1 ten 13 ones 36 = 3 tens 6 ones = 2 tens 16 ones
Some more examples:
(a) 35 = 3 tens + 5 ones (b) 60 = 6 tens + 0 ones
= 2 tens + 1 ten + 5 ones = 5 tens + 1 ten + 0 ones
= 2 tens + 10 ones + 5 ones = 5 tens + 10 ones + 0 ones
= 2 tens + 15 ones = 5 tens + 10 ones
Think and Answer
1. When 1 ten is borrowed and added to 3 ones, Remember
there are _____ ones. Regrouping of numbers
2. When 1 ten is borrowed and added to 5 ones, there are in subtraction is called
_____ ones. Borrowing.
