CheCKING SUBTRACTION WITh ADDITION
Rinki joined the students committee and deposited 80 rupees. But she withdrew 45
rupees in the same month. Hence, she is left with 80 – 45 = 35 rupees only. She wants
to check if her subtraction is correct or not. So, she does her checking as follows:
t O t O
7 10 1
8 0 Minuend 3 5 We get the minuend.
– 4 5 Subtrahend + 4 5 So, the answer is
3 5 Difference 8 0 correct.
Let us see few more examples.
(a) Checking (b) Checking
t O t O t O t O
4 7 2 1 2 10 1
– 2 6 + 2 6 3 0 1 8
2 1 4 7 – 1 2 + 1 2
1 8 3 0
The answer is correct. The answer is correct.
Thus, the sum of ‘difference’ and ‘subtrahend’ is the ‘minuend’.
That is, Difference + Subtrahend = Minuend
Practice Time 3D
Find the difference and check the answer by addition.
1. t O t O 2. t O t O
3 7 2 9
– 1 2 + – 1 9 +
3. t O t O 4. t O t O
5 1 6 0
– 2 7 + – 4 9 +
teacher’s 1. Tell the students that addition and subtraction are opposite operations of each other. So, one can be used
tip to check the other.
2. Encourage the students to develop their subtraction strategies and check them.
