Addition of 2-digit Bigger numBers
Sometimes when we add two 2-digit numbers,
we get the sum as a 3-digit number. To understand
it, let us consider the following situation.
Ritika and Mansi are decorating their home with
garlands for the Diwali celebration.
Ritika uses 60 garlands and Mansi 50 garlands.
ritika: How many garlands we have used
altogether?
t O
Mansi: To know the total, we need to add 60 and 50. 6 0
Ritika: Okay, let us add them step-wise by writing the numbers in + 5 0
columns.
Step 1. First, add the ones. Step 2. Next, add the tens and regroup.
0 + 0 = 0 ones 6 + 5 = 11 tens = 1 hundred + 1 ten
Write 0 at ones place. (More than 9 tens, so regroup into hundreds and tens.)
t O Write 1 ten at the tens column and carry
over 1 hundred to the hundreds column.
6 0
+ 5 0 H t O
0 1
6 0
+ 5 0
1 1 0
Thus, we get 60 + 50 = 110
