              example 1: Add 57 and 56.
Solution: Write the numbers one below the other and add step-wise.

Step 1. Add the ones and regroup. Step 2. Add the tens and regroup.
               7 + 6 = 13 ones = 1 ten + 3 ones 1 + 5 + 5 = 11 tens

                                                                      = 1 hundred + 1 ten

                          1 H t O
                          5 7 1 1
                 + 5 6 5 7
                               3 + 5 6

                                                                     1 1 3

              Thus, 57 + 56 = 113

                       Think and Answer
                    1. A batsman is batting at 98 and hits the next ball for a six. What will be his score?
                    2. If you add two numbers smaller than 50, will you get the sum more than 100?
                    3. What will be the greatest sum if you add any two 2-digit numbers?

              example 2: Add 42, 36 and 24.

Solution: Arrange the numbers in columns of ones and tens. Then add.
Step 1. Add the ones and regroup. Step 2. Add the tens and regroup.

               2 + 6 + 4 = 12 ones = 1 ten + 2 ones 1 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 10 tens

                                    H t O = 1 hundred + 0 tens
                                         1 H t O
                                         4 2 1

                                         3 6 4 2
                                + 2 4 3 6
                                              2 + 2 4

               Thus, 42 + 36 + 24 = 102 1 0 2
