              1. Subtract the following.

                      (a) H t O (b) H t O (c) H t O (d) H t O

                         – 6 3 4 – 4 9 0 – 2 3 3 – 4 7 5

              2. Write the numbers in columns and then subtract them.

              regrouping tens

We have learnt how to subtract by regrouping tens into ones for 2-digit numbers.

Let us use it for subtracting 3-digit numbers.
              example 1: Subtract 246 from 793.

Solution: First write the numbers in columns according to the place value and
                              then subtract.

Step 1. Subtract the ones. Step 2. Subtract the tens.

Since, 3 < 6, so regroup. 8 tens are left.

                           9 tens + 3 ones So, 8 – 4 = 4 tens
                                          = 8 tens + 13 ones H t O

                         Now, 13 – 6 = 7 ones 8 13

                                   H t O 7 9 3

                                        8 13 – 2 4 6
                                   7 9 3 4 7
                               – 2 4 6
                                             7
