              4-Digit Numbers

A special assembly was organised to observe the World Health Day in Neha’s school. On
the occasion, it was announced that the school will start working with an NGO, "Swasth

Bachpan" which takes care of the health and hygiene of about 1000 children living in the
              slums.

Neha was trying to understand the number announced. She had learned that 999 is the

              greatest 3-digit number.

She asked her father to explain the number 1000. Her father told her that when we add
1 to the greatest 3-digit number, we get the smallest 4-digit number.

                                                   9 9 9 greatest 3-digit number
                                              + 1
                                                1 0 0 0 smallest 4-digit number

It can also be represented as:

                                                             + + + =

                                             900 + 90 + 9 + 1 = 1000
              Thus, 999 + 1 = 1,000

1,000 is read as one thousand.

With this smallest 4-digit number, the next place and period in the place value chart get
              introduced.

The new period is the thousands period, and the fourth place from the right is called the

              thousands place.
