Learning by Doing
objective: To divide mentally numbers involving tens and hundreds
Materials required: Small pieces of cardboards and a marker pen
Procedure:
The teacher divides the class into groups of three.
The teacher writes three division problems (as shown here for an example) on each
set of cardboard pieces.
Each group gets one set of three division problems. 9 ÷ 3 90 ÷ 3 900 ÷ 3
The first member of the group finds the quotient of 9 ÷ 3 as 9 ÷ 3 = 3.
Other members first guess the quotients of the remaining two division problems.
Then the members use a shortcut in dividing tens and hundreds by dividing the
non-zero digits and then adding the zeros as follows:
90 ÷ 3 = 30 (9 ÷ 3 = 3 and then add a zero to ‘3’ to become ‘30’)
900 ÷ 3 = 300 (9 ÷ 3 = 3 and then add 2 zeros to ‘3’ to become ‘300’)
Every correct answer will be awarded 2 points.
Repeat the activity with the other sets of division problems 5 times and acknowledge
the student with the highest score.

The jungle school has organised a jumping race to select the new king. Four animals
participate in the race. They have to jump on a mathematical track. The animal with the
highest score will win the race. Find the winner of the race.
