              Fraction oF a collection

A collection can also be taken as a whole.

example: What fraction of the given collection is red kite?

Solution: One out of the three kites is red.
                                 Number of red kites 1
                           So, =
                                Total number of kites 3
                                   1
Thus, of the kites are red.
                                   3

                       Quick Check
Write down the fraction that shows the part of each collection that is coloured.

                       1. 2. 3.

Finding Fractions oF a collection Using division

Fractions are also equal parts of a collection.

              Half 1 of a collection
                      2
Eddy has a collection of 10 balls. He wants to give half of the balls to his younger brother,

David. So, Eddy divides the collection into two equal parts.
                                                     1
Here, each part represents half 2 of the collection.

                   1
              So, of 10 = 5 or 10 ÷ 2 = 5
                   2
i.e., half of 10 balls is 5 balls.

              Thus, David gets 5 balls.
