Riya bought a bunch of one dozen bananas. She wants to distribute these bananas among
                                                                        1
3 monkeys, so, the share of each monkey will be of the collection. For this, she divides
                                                                        3
the bunch into three equal parts as shown.

               1 means 1 out of 3 equal parts, i.e., one-third of 12 bananas is 4 bananas.
               3
                   1
              So, of 12 = 4 or 12 ÷ 3 = 4 .
                   3
              i.e., one-third of 12 bananas is 4 bananas.

Thus, each monkey gets 4 bananas.
                                                                                                        Note
              one-fourth 1 of a collection 1 dozen = 12 bananas

Sheetal has a collection of 16 soft toys.

                                                                                              1
She distributes them among her 4 sisters. Each sister gets one-fourth   of the collection.
                                                                                             
                                                                                               4
                              1
              One-fourth   means 1 part out of 4 equal parts.
                             
                              4
                   1
              So, of 16 or 16 ÷ 4 = 4, i.e.,
                   4
one -fourth of 16 is 4.

Thus, each sister gets 4 soft toys.
