Have you seen a map of a city or a location? What is a map?
A map is simply a drawing or picture or a landscape of a location. It shows the landscape
as it would be seen from above (top view).
Maps can be used for guiding directions.
Maps can also be used to find out distances in a locality.
Swati went to a bank with her mother. She observed the route and noted down the details.
1. They step out of the house and turn right.
2. Then they went straight and took the first right turn. There is a park towards her
left.
3. They go straight and took the left turn.
4. After moving a distance, they turn right. And then they
saw a petrol pump on their right. Then they go straight
and took the next right turn after the petrol pump.
5. After walking a little distance, they reach the bank
which is towards their left.
Using the above details, she drew a map with the help of
images.
The map alongside drawn by Swati, showing the route from
her home to the bank.

When we mark direction (East, West, North and South) along with the
landmarks in the map, it becomes more informative. Earlier people used a
device called compass to know the direction and find the way when they W E
travel through the sea or ocean.

Nowadays, you have probably seen that people use Global Positioning System
(GPS) to navigate their destination when they plan to go somewhere.
Search more about GPS and its use. Ask your parents to show it their phones.
