4. Convert the following as directed.
(a) 6000 mL into L (b) 9000 mL into L
(c) 3920 mL into L and mL (d) 4125 mL into L and mL

(e) Twenty 50 mL = ........ L (f) ........ 50 mL = 500 mL
addition of lengths
To add lengths, first check the units in the given values. If the values are in the same unit,
then simply add the values and write the unit.
Example 1: Add: (a) 18 m and 26 m (b) 12 km and 24 km.
1
Solution: (a) 1 8 m (b) 1 2 km
+ 2 6 m + 2 4 km
4 4 m 3 6 km
When the given lengths are a combination of two units, we arrange them in their
respective columns and then add them.
Example 2: Add 35 m 62 cm and 18 m 18 cm.
Solution: Arrange the given lengths in the two columns of m and cm and then add them.
Step 1: Add ‘cm’.
62 cm + 18 cm = 80 cm m cm
Write 80 in the cm column. 1 1
Step 2: Add ‘m’. 3 5 6 2
35 m + 18 m = 53 m + 1 8 1 8
5 3
8 0
Write 53 in the m column.
Thus, 35 m 62 cm + 18 m 18 cm = 53 m 80 cm
Note
While adding km and m, the number of metres is always written in 3 digits. For example, 3 m is
written as 003 m.
