Example 3: Subtract 18 kg 628 g from 29 kg 76 g.
Solution: Arrange the given measures in the two columns of ‘kg’ and ‘g’ correctly. Now,
subtract them as ordinary numbers.
Step 1: Subtract ‘g’.
We cannot subtract 628 g from 76 g.
So, we borrow 1 kg from 29 kg, leaving behind 28 kg.
Now 1 kg 76 g = 1076 g
And 1076 g – 628 g = 448 g kg g
Write 448 under the g column. 1 8 10 6 16
Step 2: Subtract ‘kg’. 2 9 0 7 6
28 kg – 18 kg = 10 kg – 1 8 6 2 8
Write 10 under the kg column. 1 0 4 4 8
Thus, 29 kg 76 g – 18 kg 628 g = 10 kg 448 g

Example 1: Subtract the following:
(a) 550 mL – 275 mL (b) 248 L – 198 L
Solution: (a) 14 (b) 1 14
4 4 10 2 4 8 L
5 5 0 mL – 1 9 8 L
– 2 7 5 mL 5 0 L
2 7 5 mL
Example 2: Subtract 15 L 346 mL from 20 L 940 mL.
Solution: Arrange the given measures in the columns of L and mL and then subtract.
Step 1: Subtract millilitres. L mL
940 mL – 346 mL = 594 mL 13
Write 594 under the ml column. 1 10 8 3 10
Step 2: Subtract litres. 2 0 9 4 0
– 1 5 3 4 6
20 L – 15 L = 5 L 5 5 9 4
Write 5 under the L column.
Thus, 20 L 940 mL – 15 L 346 mL = 5 L 594 mL.
