same Number of Digits
Let us compare the two 4-digit numbers. Compare the thousands digits first. The number
with a greater digit at the thousands place is greater.
example 2: Compare: (a) 7,120 and 6,585 (b) 6,182 and 8,115
Solution: th H t O th H t O
7 1 2 0 6 1 8 2
6 5 8 5 8 1 1 5
Since, 7 > 6 Since, 6 < 8
So, 7,120 > 6,585 So, 6,182 < 8,115
If the thousands digits are the same, then compare the hundreds digits.
The number with a greater digit at the hundreds place is greater.
example 3: Compare: (a) 6,855 and 6,321 (b) 7,182 and 7,298
Solution: th H t O th H t O
6 8 5 5 7 1 8 2
6 3 2 1 7 2 9 8
Same 8 > 3 Same 1 < 2
So, 6,855 > 6,321 So, 7,182 < 7,298
If the thousands digits and hundreds digits are the same, then compare tens digits.
The number with a greater digit at the tens place is greater.
example 4: Compare: (a) 4,729 and 4,716 (b) 9,126 and 9,198
Solution: th H t O th H t O
4 7 2 9 9 1 2 6
4 7 1 6 9 1 9 8
Same 2 > 1 Same 2 < 9
So, 4,729 > 4,716 So, 9,126 < 9,198
If all other digits except ones are the same, then compare the ones digits. The number
with a greater digit at the ones place is greater.
example 5: Compare: (a) 9,115 and 9,118 (b) 3,229 and 3,224
Solution: th H t O th H t O
9 1 1 5 3 2 2 9
9 1 1 8 3 2 2 4
Same 5 < 8 Same 9 > 4
So, 9,115 < 9,118 So, 3,229 > 3,224
