              addition and subtraCtion oF Money

To add or subtract the money, follow these steps:
Step 1: Arrange the given amounts in columns such that the dots Note

remain in one column. Regroup paise into
Step 2: Add or subtract the amounts as ordinary numbers. rupees if required.

Step 3: Put a dot in the sum in the dots column.

              example 1: Add `70.20 and `25.45. example 2: Add `102.75 and `225.25.

              Solution: ` 7 0 . 2 0 Solution: 1 1

                            + ` 2 5 . 4 5 ` 1 0 2 . 7 5
                               ` 9 5 . 6 5 + ` 2 2 5 . 2 5
                                                                                        ` 3 2 8 . 0 0

                     Thus, `70.20 + `25.45 = `95.65 Thus, `102.75 + `225.25 = `328.00

              example 3: Subtract `423.25 from `533.50. example 4: Subtract `109.25 from

                                                                                    `423.75.
              Solution: 4 10 Solution: 1 13

                               ` 5 3 3 . 5 0 ` 4 2 3 . 7 5
                            – ` 4 2 3 . 2 5 – ` 1 0 9 . 2 5
                               ` 1 1 0 . 2 5 ` 3 1 4 . 5 0

                   Thus, `533.50 – `423.25 = `110.25. Thus, `423.75 – `109.25 = `314.50.

example 5: Ram bought a toy for `210.50 and a pair of shoes for `579.75. How much
money did he spend in total?

              Solution: 1 1

                           The cost of the toy = ` 2 1 0 . 5 0

                           The cost of a pair of shoes = + ` 5 7 9 . 7 5
                           The total cost of both items = ` 7 9 0 . 2 5 ` 210.50 ` 579.75

Thus, Ram spent `790.25 in total.

example 6: Sanya wants to buy a mobile that costs `7650.50. She has only `6475 in her
purse. How much more money does she need to buy the mobile phone?

Solution: Sanya subtracted a smaller amount from the bigger amount to check how
much more money does she need to buy the mobile phone.
