                       Practice time 1D

              1. Form the greatest and the smallest 4-digit numbers using the given digits.

digits greatest 4-digit number Smallest 4-digit number

                    (a) 3, 7, 1, 9

                    (b) 9, 8, 4, 2
                    (c) 5, 7, 1, 0
                    (d) 4, 7, 9, 7

                    (e) 0, 3, 6, 2

              2. Form the number with:
                   (a) 4 in the thousands place (b) 9 in the thousands place

8 in the hundreds place 1 in the hundreds place
5 in the tens place 0 in the tens place
2 in the ones place 6 in the ones place

              successor

The number that comes just after the given number is called its successor.
To find the successor of any number, add 1 to the number.

example 1: Find the successor of:

                   (a) 86 (b) 709 (c) 2,154
              Solution: (a) The successor of 86 is 86 + 1 = 87

                             (b) The successor of 709 is 709 + 1 = 710

                             (c) The successor of 2,154 is 2,154 + 1 = 2,155
              Predecessor

The number that comes just before the given number is called its predecessor.
To find the predecessor of any number, subtract 1 from the number.

example 2: Find the predecessor of:

                   (a) 30 (b) 921 (c) 8,120
              Solution: (a) The predecessor of 30 is 30 – 1 = 29

                             (b) The predecessor of 921 is 921 – 1 = 920

                             (c) The predecessor of 8,120 is 8,120 – 1 = 8,119
