Addition of 4-digit numbers
Adding 4-digit numbers is the same as adding 3-digit numbers.
Beginning with adding the ones, move on to adding the tens, then
hundreds and finally, the thousands.
Addition of 4-digit numbers without regrouping
Shruti and her father went to see their orchard.
Shruti: How many trees are there in our orchard?
Father: There are 2326 mango trees and 1253 apple trees.
Shruti: How do we find the total number of trees?
Father: We can find the total number of trees by adding them.
Write the numbers in columns and use the following steps:
Step 1: Add the ones. 6 + 3 = 9 ones
Write 9 in the ones column.
Step 2: Add the tens. 2 + 5 = 7 tens th H t O
Write 7 in the tens column. 2 3 2 6
Step 3: Add the hundreds. 3 + 2 = 5 hundreds + 1 2 5 3
Write 5 in the hundreds column. 3 5 7 9
Step 4: Add the thousands. 2 + 1 = 3 thousands
Write 3 in the thousands column.
Thus, the sum of 2326 and 1253 is
3579.
