example 1: Find the sum of 6043 and 2954.
Solution: Write the number in columns and use the following steps:
Step 1: Add the ones. 3 + 4 = 7 ones
Write 7 in the ones column.
Step 2: Add the tens. 4 + 5 = 9 tens th H t O
Write 9 in the tens column.
Step 3: Add the hundreds. 0 + 9 = 9 hundreds 6 0 4 3
Write 9 in the hundreds column. + 2 9 5 4
Step 4: Add the thousands. 6 + 2 = 8 thousands 8 9 9 7
Write 8 in the thousands column.
Thus, the sum of 6043 and 2954 is 8997.
Addition of three 4-digit numbers
Adding three 4-digit numbers is the same as adding three 3-digit numbers.
example 2: Find the sum of 1632, 2140 and 117.
Solution: Write the number in the place value column and add using the
following steps:
Step 1: Add the ones. 2 + 0 + 7 = 9 ones th H t O
Step 2: Add the tens. 3 + 4 + 1 = 8 tens 1 6 3 2
Step 3: Add the hundreds. 6 + 1 + 1 = 8 hundreds 2 1 4 0
Step 4: Add the thousands. 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 thousands + 3 1 1 7
Thus, the sum of 1632, 2140 and 3117 is 6889. 6 8 8 9
