2. Arrange in columns and find the sum of the following:

(a) 2415 + 3120 (b) 4345 + 2632 (c) 6302 + 2475
(d) 6473 + 3515 (e) 1243 + 4535 + 1201 (f) 2345 + 1023 + 4001

Addition of 4-digit numbers with regrouping

example 1: Find the sum of 3506 and 1225.

Solution: Arrange the numbers in place value columns and add using the following steps:
Step 1: Add the ones.

6 + 5 = 11 ones.
Regroup 11 ones as 1 ten and 1 one

Write 1 in the ones column and carry over 1 ten in the tens column.
Step 2: Add the tens. 1 (carried over) + 0 + 2 = 3 tens th H t O
Write 3 in the tens column. 1

Step 3: Add the hundreds. 5 + 2 = 7 hundreds 3 5 0 6
Write 7 in the hundreds column. + 1 2 2 5

Step 4: Add the thousands. 3 + 1 = 4 thousands 4 7 3 1
Write 4 in the thousands column.
Thus, the sum of 3506 + 1225 = 4731.

example 2: Find the sum of 1076 and 2282.

Solution: Arrange the numbers in place value columns and add using the following steps:
Step 1: Add the ones. th H t O
6 + 2 = 8 ones 1

Write 8 in the ones column. 1 0 7 6

Step 2: Add the tens. + 2 2 8 2
7 + 8 = 15 tens = 1 hundred + 5 tens 3 3 5 8

Write 5 in the tens column and carry over 1 in the
hundreds column.

Step 3: Add the hundreds.
1 (carried over) + 0 + 2 = 3 hundreds
Write 3 in the hundreds column.

Step 4: Add the thousands.

1 + 2 = 3 thousands
Write 3 in the thousands column.

Thus, the sum of 1076 + 2282 = 3358.
