Add and check the answer by changing the direction of the addition of numbers.
1. 2. 3.
H t O H t O th H t O
8 7 2 1 0 6 3 0 9 0
+ 1 2 7 + 4 0 5 + 6 3 0 7
Addition properties
order of Addition
Let us see what happens when we change the order of the addends while adding.
Look at the following sum:
(a) H t O H t O (b) th H t O th H t O
2 4 3 1 2 5 2 3 5 0 3 0 4 3
+ 1 2 5 + 2 4 3 + 3 0 4 3 + 2 3 5 0
3 6 8 3 6 8 5 3 9 3 5 3 9 3
We observe that in both cases, we get the same answer.
So, we can conclude that the order of the addends does not affect the sum obtained.
This is called the order property of addition.
property of 0
When ‘0’ is added to a number, the sum is equal to the number itself.
examples: (a) 123 + 0 = 123 (b) 4325 + 0 = 4325 (c) 6739 + 0 = 6739
property of 1
When we add '1' to any number, the sum obtained is the successor of that number.
examples: (a) 386 + 1 = 387 (b) 2168 + 1 = 2169 (c) 4329 + 1 = 4330
Adding 10, 100 And 1000
Adding 10
When we add '10' to a number, the value of the digit at the tens place increases by 1 and
the ones digit remains the same.
examples: (a) 442 + 10 = 452 (b) 6954 + 10 = 6964 (c) 5302 + 10 = 5312
