Let us learn the steps for solving word problems. Learn the mnemonic to remember
r — Read the steps for solving word problems.

U — Understand (the problem) “Red Ugly Dragon Sings Loudly.”

d — Decide (the strategy -which mathematical operation required)
              S — Solve

L — Look back (check the solution)

example 1: Mohit bought a DVD player for `3545 and a printer for `5499. How much
              money did he spend?

Solution: to Understand: The cost of a DVD player and a printer is given. We have to
find the total money Mohit spent.

to decide: To find the total money spent, we need to add the cost of both items.

                                                                         th H t O th H t O
                             to Solve: Cost of DVD player (in `) = 3 5 4 5 5 4 9 9

                             Cost of printer (in `) = + 5 4 9 9 + 3 5 4 5
                             Total amount spent (in `) = 9 0 4 4 9 0 4 4

To lookback (checking): Changing the order of the addtion.
                            Thus, Mohit spent `9044.

example 2: 5735 boxes have been put in a truck. 437 more boxes can be put in it. What

is the total number of boxes that can be put in the truck?
              Solution: th H t O
                           Number of boxes put in a truck = 5 7 3 5

Number of more boxes that can be put in the truck = + 4 3 7
                           Total number of boxes = 6 1 7 2

Thus, 6172 boxes can be put in the truck.
