                                   Learning by Doing

Objective: To learn addition of 4-digit numbers in a play-way method.

              Materials required: Paper and pencil
              Procedure:

Š The teacher can take children to the school parking area and tell them

to note down the 4-digit vehicle numbers of any four vehicles. Or she/
he can ask them in advance to note down the vehicle numbers while xy* m7234
they are coming to the school.

Š Then children will be grouped to work in pairs.

Š Each child will make four slips and write his numbers. Next each child will take out a
slip and show the number to each other. Then, they will find the sum of the two 4-digit

numbers with the condition that he/she will write his/her own number on the top row.

                     For example, Child A: 2158 Child B: 4693
                      So, 2158 4693

                                                + 4693 + 2158

                                                 6851 6851
Š Check the working of each other and discuss the answers obtained.

Š Note that the answer should be a 4-digit number. If the answer is a 5-digit number,
it will be ignored and new pair of numbers will be tried.
