                       Practice Time 3A

              1. Subtract the following.

                   (a) H t O (b) H t O (c) H t O (d) H t O

                          9 3 7 8 6 9 6 4 3 9 3 4
                       – 4 3 2 – 5 0 2 – 3 1 1 – 6 4 6

                   (e) H t O (f) H t O (g) H t O (h) H t O

                          5 0 4 8 4 6 9 0 0 6 2 0
                       – 2 4 8 – 4 8 3 – 4 8 8 – 3 8 9

              2. Find the difference by arranging the numbers in columns.

                   (a) 628 – 436 (b) 843 – 257 (c) 619 – 381 (d) 830 – 538

                   (e) 609 – 528 (f ) 576 – 348 (g) 930 – 648 (h) 400 – 178

              Subtraction of 4-digit numberS

We have learned the subtraction of 3-digit numbers without and with regrouping. The
same method is applied when we subtract 4-digit numbers without and with regrouping.

              Subtraction without Regrouping

              Example 1: Subtract 6578 from 9999.

Solution: Write the numbers in columns and follow the given steps: th H t O
                                                                                                           9 9 9 9
                             Step 1: Subtract the ones. 9 ones – 8 ones = 1 one – 6 5 7 8
                             Step 2: Subtract the tens. 9 tens – 7 tens = 2 tens 3 4 2 1

                             Step 3: Subtract the hundreds. 9 hundreds – 5 hundreds = 4 hundreds

                             Step 4: Subtract the thousands. 9 thousands – 6 thousands = 3 thousands

                             Thus, 9999 – 6578 = 3421
              Subtraction with Regrouping

Titu and Sonu live in Bhopal. They are planning to go on a long vacation with their parents.

Titu: We plan to go to Jammu by car or flight.

Sonu: I prefer car. However, what is the difference between distances travelled by car or flight?
