Example 2: In a village, there are 2135 men and 1987 women. If the population of the

village is 8000, how many children are there in the village?

Solution: We can find the number of children either by adding 2135 and 1987 and
then subtracting the sum from 8000 or by subtracting 2135 from 8000 and

                             then 1987 from the difference.

                             The number of children in the village = 8000 – 2135 – 1987 = 3878

Therefore, the number of children in the village is 3878.

              checking Subtraction with addition

To check subtraction, add the difference to the smaller number (subtrahend). If the sum

is equal to the bigger number that is minuend, then the subtraction is correct.
Example 1: Subtract 512 from 925 and check whether the difference is correct or not.

              Solution: Subtraction Checking using addition

                                H t O H t O

                                 9 2 5 Minuend 4 1 3 Difference
                             – 5 1 2 Subtrahend + 5 1 2 Subtrahend
                                 4 1 3 Difference 9 2 5 Minuend

Clearly, the sum of the ‘difference’ and the ‘subtrahend’ is equal to the

‘minuend’. Thus, the difference is correct.
