Division by 1-Digit number (Without regrouping)
Division of a 2-digit number
Swati bought 68 packets of biscuits. She wants to distribute
them among the children of 2 orphanages.
Would you like to help her in the division?
Let us divide 68 by 2 in the following way, so that each orphanage
gets the equal number of packets of biscuits.
Step 1: First, arrange the numbers in the long-division form.
Step 2: Then divide 6 tens by 2. 2 68 34 Q
We know that 2 × 3 = 6, so, 6 tens ÷ 2 = 3 tens. 6
Write 3 in the tens place of the quotient and write 6 in the tens 08
8
place below the dividend. 0 R
Step 3: Subtract the digits of the tens column. 6 – 6 = 0
Step 4: Now, 0 < 2, so bring down 8 ones.
Step 5: Divide 8 ones by 2.
We know that 2 × 4 = 8, so 8 ones ÷ 2 = 4 ones
Write 4 in the ones place of the Checking:
quotient and 8 in the ones place (Quotient × Divisor) + Remainder = Dividend
below the dividend as shown. (34 × 2) + 0 = 68
Step 6: Subtract the digits of the ones 68 + 0 = 68
column. 8 – 8 = 0 Thus, the answer is correct.
Thus, quotient (Q) = 34, Remainder (R) = 0
Therefore, each orphanage gets 34 packets of biscuits.
