Divide the following and check your answer.

              1. 67 ÷ 6 2. 56 ÷ 5 3. 88 ÷ 4 4. 70 ÷ 7

              5. 999 ÷ 9 6. 889 ÷ 8 7. 508 ÷ 5 8. 634 ÷ 3

Division by 1-Digit number (With regrouping)

              Division of a 2-digit number

              example 1: Divide 78 by 2.

Solution: Step 1. Arrange the numbers in long division form. 2 78 39 Q

                             Step 2. Divide 7 tens by 2. We know that 2 × 3 = 6 < 7 and 6
                                                                                                        18
                                       2 × 4 = 8 > 7. 18
                                                                                                         0 R
So, write 3 in tens place in the quotient and 6
                                       below 7.

                             Step 3. Subtract the digits of the tens column. 7 – 6 = 1

                             Step 4. Bring down 8 ones and regroup. 1 ten + 8 ones = 18 ones.

Step 5. Divide 18 ones by 2. Checking:

                                         We have: 2 × 9 = 18, (Quotient × Divisor) + Remainder = Dividend
                                       so write 9 in the ones (39 × 2) + 0 = 78
                                       place of the quotient 78 + 0 = 78

                                                                                              78 = 78
and subtract Thus, the answer is correct.
                                       18 – 18 = 0
                                       Thus, quotient (Q) = 39, remainder (R) = 0.

              Division of a 3-digit number

              example 2: Divide 289 by 6.
              Solution: Step 1. Divide 2 hundreds by 6. 2 < 6, so, 2 cannot be 6 289 48 Q

                                       divided by 6. 24
So, regroup hundreds and tens. 49
                                                                                                        48
                                       2 hundreds + 8 tens = 28 tens 1 R

                             Step 2: Divide 28 tens by 6. Since 6 × 4 = 24 < 28 and 6 × 5 = 30 > 28.

So, write 4 in tens place of the quotient and 24 just below 28.
                             Step 3: Subtract: 28 tens – 24 tens = 4 tens
