We have also learnt that in a fraction, the number above the Numerator 3
horizontal line is the numerator and the number below the Horizontal 4
horizontal line is the denominator. line
Denominator
Now, let us learn more about the fractions.
Like and UnLike Fractions
Like Fractions
Look at the given figures.
1 2 3 4 5
6 6 6 6 6
Each of these figures has been divided into 6 equal parts but shaded differently. The
denominators of the fractions representing the shaded parts are same.
That is 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 . These are called like fractions.
6 6 6 6 6
Thus, the two or more fractions having the same denominator are called like fractions.
Some more examples of like fractions are 1 , 2 , 3 and 4 ; 7 , 3 and 9 .
5 5 5 5 11 11 11
Unlike Fractions
Look at the given figures.
2 3 4 3
4 8 6 10
These figures are divided into different number of parts and shaded differently. The
denominators of the fractions representing the shaded parts are different. These are
called unlike fractions.
That is 2 , 3 , 4 , 3 . Thus, the two or more fractions which do not have the same
4 8 6 10
denominator are called unlike fractions.
