conversion of improper Fractions into mixed Fractions

An improper fraction can be converted into a mixed fraction.

To convert an improper fraction into a mixed fraction, divide the numerator by the

              denominator.

The quotient is the whole number of the mixed fraction. The remainder placed over
the denominator (unchanged) gives the fractional part.

                                                    Remainder
Improper fraction = Quotient = Mixed fraction
                                                      Divisor

example 1: Convert into a mixed fraction.
                                        2
Solution: Divide numerator 5 by the denominator 2.

                             5   = 5 ÷ 2

                             2 2 5 2 Whole part

                                     2 2 (new)
converting mixed Fractions into improper Fractions

A mixed fraction can be converted into an improper fraction.

To convert a mixed fraction into an improper fraction, we multiply the whole number
by the denominator of the fraction and add the numerator to the product obtained.

The sum placed over the denominator gives the improper fraction.

                                          Denominator × Whole + Numerator
Mixed fraction = = Improper fraction
