example 3: Write the number and the number name for the number shown on the

              abacus.
                    (a) (b) (c)

                          tth th H t O tth th H t O tth th H t O

              Solution: Remember

                    (a) 14,273 – Fourteen thousand two hundred seventy-three. In (b) there is no beads
                                                                                             in hundreds place.
                    (b) 63,054 – Sixty-three thousand fifty-four. It represents zero
                                                                                             hundreds. Similarly,
                    (c) 50,901 – Fifty thousand nine hundred one. there are zero
                                                                                             thousands and zero
                                                                                             tens in (c).
              6-digit numbers

Now, we know that 99999 is the greatest 5-digit number. Let us add 1 to it.

              Greatest 5-digit number → 99999 + 1 = 100000 ← Smallest 6-digit number

On adding 1 to the greatest 5-digit number, we get Lakhs thousands Ones

              the smallest 6-digit number. L tth th H t O

              100000 is read as one lakh. It is the smallest 6-digit 9 9 9 9 9

              number. + 1
                                                                                        1 0 0 0 0 0
To represent 100000 (One lakh) in the place value

chart, we need to add one more place, i.e., the sixth place from the right which

represents ‘lakhs place’ and for this, we have to introduce a new period called ‘Lakhs’.

Thus, the place value chart for 6-digit numbers has 3 periods: Remember

Ones, thousands and Lakhs. Lakhs period also has
                                                                                             two places: Lakhs (L)
Hence, 100000 (One lakh) is represented on the place value and Ten Lakhs (TL).
              chart as follows:

               Periods → Lakhs thousands Ones

Places → Lakhs ten thousands thousands Hundreds (H) tens Ones
                                 (L) (tth) (th) (t) (O)
