rePresentation of decimal nUmbers on Place valUe chart

We know that when we move from right to left in the place value chart, the value

of the respective places increases by 10 times.

Also, we can say when we move from left to right in the place value chart the value
of the respective places decreases by 10 times.
Now, if we extend place value chart to the right of the ones place, the place value

at the places to the right of ones place will be the fractional. The place value of first
right place after the ones place is tenths 1 and again moving towards right of
                                                                     10
tenths place the place value will be hundredths 1 and so on.
                                                                            100
                                                                                                       Note
Places → tens Ones • tenths Hundredths In a decimal, each

               Values of the → (10) (1) • 1 1 place to the right of
                                                                                              the decimal point is
               places 10 100 called a decimal place.

We write the digits towards the right of ones place digit using dot (.) or decimal

              point.
              For example,

                          tens Ones tenths Hundredths

                          (10) (1) • 1 1
                                                             10 100
                    (a) 4 • 1 2 Remember
                                                                                                  We do not read and
                    (b) 1 0 • 0 7 write the digits in

                    (c) 4 8 • 8 1 words at the right
                                                                                                  of the decimal
                    (d) 9 9 • 9 9 point together

We write and read these decimal numbers as follows:
                    (a) 4.12: Four point one two (b) 10.07: Ten point zero seven

                    (c) 48.81: forty-eight point eight one (d) 99.99 Ninety-nine point nine nine

example 1: Write the following decimal numbers in the numeral form.
                    (a) Two point zero nine (b) Three point seven two

                    (c) Fifty point one nine (d) Seventy-three point zero three

                    (e) Eighty-four point six

teacher’s Explain to the children about the difference between “tens and tenths”, “hundreds and hundredths”, etc.
