              conversion of fractions and decimals

              converting decimal fractions into decimals

The fractions with denominators 10, 100, ..., etc., are called decimal fractions.

fractions with denominator 10 or 100

The fractions with denominator 10 are converted into decimals by putting a decimal

point (.) after one digit from the right in the numerator.

                                   7 3 5
              examples: (a) = 07 . (b) = 03 . (c) = 05 .
                                  10 10 10

The fractions with denominator 100 are converted into decimals by putting a decimal

point (.) after two digits from the right in the numerator.

                                                                                                        .
              examples: (a) = 034 (b) = 072
                                  100 100
                             (c) 8 = 0.08

100 A zero has been added before
8 to make two decimal places
              Mixed Numbers

A mixed number is a combination of a whole number and a fraction. To write a mixed

number as a decimal, write the whole number as it is and convert the fractional

              parts into decimals.

                                    5 1 85
              examples: (a) 3 = 35 . (b) 2 = 201 (c) 3 = 385
                                                                                                          .
                                                                            .
                                   10 100 100
              converting decimals into decimal fractions

To convert a decimal into a decimal fraction, write the given decimal number as the

numerator without the decimal point and in the denominator, write 1 followed by as

many zeros as there are digits after the decimal point.

              examples: (a) 09. = (b) 009. = (c) 175. = = 1
