              Basics of Geometry
                                                                          Knowledge Desk
Let us recall basic concept of geometry

learnt in the previous class. The word Geometry is derived from the
Greek words ‘Geo’, means ‘Earth’ and ‘metron’
Point means ‘Measurement’. Thus, the word
                                                                        ‘Geometry’ means “Earth’s measurement”.
A small dot made with a sharp pencil or

a pen marked on a paper, the tip of a needle, etc. represents a point.

A point shows an exact location.

It has no length, breadth or thickness. Q

Point is denoted by a capital letter.
                                                                                               P A
For example, Q, P and A are points.
              Line

A straight path which goes in both directions indefinitely A B

              is called a line.

Thus, a line has no end points. For naming a given line, we consider any two points
lying on it. For example, if A and B are any two points on a line, we say it ‘line AB’

and the line is denoted by AB .

              ray

A ray is a part of a line which goes on only in one A B

direction. A ray has one end point. For example, in the
given figure, AB is a ray which can be written as AB , where A is its initial

point. Sunray is an example of ray.
