The face value of a digit in a number is the digit itself.
The place value of a particular digit in a number depends upon its position in the
respective period of the place value chart.
Place value of a digit = Face value of a digit × value of the place
example 1: Write the face value and the place value of each digit in the numbers
given below:
(a) 89,752 (b) 3,41,975
Solution:
(a) In 89,752, we can find the face value and place value of each digit as shown below.
tth th H t O
8 9 7 5 2 Face value × Value of the place = Place value
2 × 1 = 2
5 × 10 = 50
7 × 100 = 700
9 × 1000 = 9000
8 × 10000 = 80000
(b) In 3,41,975, we can find the face value and place value of each digit as
shown below.
L tth th H t O
3 4 1 9 7 5 Face value × Value of the place = Place value
5 × 1 = 5
7 × 10 = 70
9 × 100 = 900
1 × 1000 = 1000
4 × 10000 = 40000
3 × 100000 = 300000
expanded Form and short Form of a number
Let us consider the place value of each digit in the number 1,24,587.
L tth th H t O
1 2 4 5 8 7 Face value × Value of the place = Place value
7 × 1 = 7
8 × 10 = 80
5 × 100 = 500
4 × 1000 = 4000
2 × 10000 = 20000
1 × 100000 = 100000
