Some figures or objects have more than one line of symmetry. These lines of symmetry
can be vertical, horizontal or diagonal.
Note
A circle have
infinite diameter
and so it has
infinite line of
symmetry.
Three lines of symmetry Two lines of symmetry Four lines of symmetry
activity
Take a sheet of paper and fold it in half twice.
Cut out any shapes on the corners with a pair of scissors and unfold the paper.
⇒ ⇒ ⇒ ⇒
The figure so obtained will look identical if folded along any of the dotted lines.
The design so formed by cutting is symmetrical because when folded on any of
the dotted line, both the halves overlap each other.
The square design shown above has 2 lines of symmetry.
Some letters of the English alphabet also show symmetry.
Think and Answer
Is there any number
from 0 to 9 which has
a line of symmetry?
If yes, write them.

1. Which of the following figures are symmetrical?
(a) (b) (c) (d)
(e) (f) (g) (h)
teacher’s Discuss with the students with examples that, there are some shapes or letters of the English alphabet that
tip are not symmetrical, these shapes are called asymmetrical.
