              PredeCessor And suCCessor

The predecessor of a number is a number that comes just before the given number.

The predecessor of a number is obtained by subtracting 1 from it.
              For example, 48,947 – 1 = 48,946 ; 2,34,564 – 1 = 2,34,563

Clearly, the predecessor of a number is 1 less than the given number.
The successor of a number is a number that comes just after the given number. The
successor of a given number is obtained by adding 1 to it.

              For example, 78,547 + 1 = 78,548 ; 6,85,798 + 1 = 6,85,799

Clearly, the successor of a number is 1 more than the given number.
example: Write the predecessor and the successor of the following numbers.

                    (a) 47,129 (b) 87,100 (c) 2,54,785 (d) 7,84,071

              Solution:
                    (a) Predecessor of 47,129 = 47,129 – 1 = 47,128

                         Successor of 47,129 = 47,129 + 1 = 47,130
                    (b) Predecessor of 87,100 = 87,100 – 1 = 87,099

                         Successor of 87,100 = 87,100 + 1 = 87,101
                    (c) Predecessor of 2,54,785 = 2,54,785 – 1 = 2,54,784

                         Successor of 2,54,785 = 2,54,785 + 1 = 2,54,786

                    (d) Predecessor of 7,84,071 = 7,84,071 – 1 = 7,84,070
                         Successor of 7,84,071 = 7,84,071 + 1 = 7,84,072

                       Think and Answer
                    1. What is the successor of the greatest 5-digit number?
                    2. How many digits are there in the predecessor of the greatest 6-digit number?

                    (a) 300000 + 8000 + 900 + 60 (b) 1L + 4TTh + 3Th + 6H + 2T + 9O
