conversion of Bigger units of Weight (Mass) into Smaller units

The conversion of units of weight (mass) follows the same rules as the units of length.
To convert a bigger unit into a smaller unit, we multiply.

For example, to convert kilograms into grams, we multiply the number of kilograms
              by 1000.
              example 1: Convert the following.

                             (a) 8 kg 245 g into g (b) 28 g 250 mg into mg (c) 51 kg into dag

              Solution: (a) We have, 1 kg = 1000 g
                                 So, 8 kg 245 g = 8 kg + 245 g

                                                           = (8 × 1000) g + 245 g = 8000 g + 245 g
                                                           = 8245 g
                             (b) We have, 1 g = 1000 mg

                                 So, 28 g 250 mg = 28 g + 250 mg
                                                           = (28 × 1000) mg + 250 mg = 28000 mg + 250 mg

                                                           = 28250 mg
                             (c) We have, 1 kg = 100 dag

                                                   51 kg = 51 × 100 dag
                                                           = 5100 dag

              example 2: Convert 9 kg 8 hg 7 dag 6 g into g.
              Solution: 9 kg 8 hg 7 dag 6 g = (9 × 1000) g + (8 × 100) g + (7 × 10) g + 6 g

                                                       = 9000 g + 800 g + 70 g + 6 g = 9876 g

conversion of Smaller units of Weight into Bigger units
To convert a smaller unit into a bigger unit, we divide. For example, to convert

milligrams into grams, we divide the number of milligrams by 1000.
example 3: Convert the following into kilograms and grams.

                             (a) 8040 g (b) 5238 g

              Solution: (a) 8040 g = 8000 g + 40 g = (8000 ÷ 1000) kg + 40 g
                                           = 8 kg 40 g

                             (b) 5238 g = 5000 g + 238 g = (5000 ÷ 1000) kg + 238 g
                                           = 5 kg 238 g

example 4: Convert the following into grams and milligrams.
                             (a) 3458 mg (b) 5002 mg

              Solution: (a) 3458 mg = 3000 mg + 458 mg = (3000 ÷ 1000) g + 458 g
                                             = 3 g 458 mg
