              Measuring CapaCity (VoluMe)

The base unit of measuring capacity (volume) is litre (L). It is the standard unit for

measuring capacity. There are some other units of capacities also.
                                                                                         Smaller units
The units bigger than litre (L) are kilolitre (kL), hectolitre ×1000 ×1000
                                                                                                         ×100
              (hL) and decalitre (daL). ×100 ×10 ×10
kL hL daL L dL cL mL
                         1 kL = 10 hL = 100 daL = 1000 L ÷10 ÷10
                                                                                              ÷100 ÷100
                         1 hL = 10 daL = 100 L ÷1000 ÷1000
                                                                                                       Bigger units
                       1 daL = 10 L
The units smaller than litre (L) are decilitre (dL), centilitre (cL) and millilitre (mL).

                          1 L = 10 dL = 100 cL = 1000 mL

                         1 dL = 10 cL = 100 mL

                         1 cL = 10 mL
conversion of Bigger units of capacity into Smaller units

The relation between the units of capacity (volume) will help us convert one unit
into another one. To convert a bigger unit into a smaller unit, we multiply.

              example 1: Convert the following.

                            (a) 13 L into mL (b) 25 L 200 mL into mL
                            (c) 3 kL into daL (d) 6 kL 350 L into L

              Solution: (a) We have, 1 L = 1000 mL
                                So, 13 L = (13 × 1000) mL = 13000 mL

                            (b) We have, 1 L = 1000 mL

                                  25 L 200 mL = 25 L + 200 mL
                                                     = (25 × 1000) mL + 200 mL
                                                     = 25000 mL + 200 mL

                                                     = 25200 mL
                            (c) We have, 1 kL = 100 daL Quick Check

                                So, 3 kL = (3 × 100) daL How many 5 l

                                                     = 300 daL millilitres of 4 l
                                                                                      liquid are
                            (d) We have, 1 kL = 1000 L there in the 3 l
                                                                                                                    2 l
                                So, 6 kL 350 L = 6 kL + 350 L container? 1 l

                                                     = (6 × 1000) L + 350 L
                                                     = 6000 L + 350 L = 6350 L
