4. Write the predecessor and the successor of the following numbers:
(a) 34364 (b) 73648 (c) 11143
(d) 840068 (e) 154836 (f) 199999
5. (a) Find the sum of the place values of two 6s in 460246.
(b) Find the difference of the place value and the face value of digit 4 in 740128.
ComPAring And ordering numbers
We have already learnt the method of comparing numbers up to 4 digits in the
previous class. The rules of comparison for large numbers are the same.
Comparing numbers with different number of digits
The number with more digits is greater.
example 1: Compare 36,455 and 6,83,779
Solution: tth th H t O L tth th H t O
3 6 4 5 5 6 8 3 7 7 9
5 digits 6 digits
Thus, 36,455 < 6,83,779.
Comparing numbers with the same number of digits
If the number of digits is same in the given numbers, then we start comparing the
digits from the extreme left, that is, from the greatest place to the lower places.
If the digits are same at a place, we move to the next digit from the left until we
find different digits at any particular place. The digits that are different are compared
to find the larger number.
example 2: Which is greater?
(a) 62,538 or 62,438 (b) 8,24,646 or 8,24,776
Solution:
(a) tthth H t O tthth H t O (b) L tthth H t O L tthth H t O
6 2 5 3 8 6 2 4 3 8 8 2 4 6 4 6 8 2 4 7 7 6
= =
= =
> =
<
So, 62,538 > 62,438 So, 8,24,646 < 8,24,776
