Learning by Doing
Objective: To understand the concept of metric measures of length and weight
(mass).
Materials required: A measuring tape, a weighing machine, chalk powder, balls and
wooden stick of different weights and sizes, pencil and notebook
procedure:
The teacher should take out the class in the
playground to perform this activity. She/he may
invite the physical teacher for guidance.
Using the chalk powder, make a circle and mark few
lines after a certain distance such as the track used
in shot put event.
Divide the class into groups of 5-6 students and invite the group one by one.
A member of a group will take a ball and throw it as far as possible. Other
members will measure the distance using measuring tape and note down the
record.
Repeat the activity till all members take their turn. Arrange the performance in
ascending or descending order.
Similar activity will be done by each group.
For variation, teacher can ask the best performers of each group
to do the activity with a little heavier ball. The best among all
performers can be rewarded.
Instead of balls, they can be also asked to throw wooden sticks
like a javelin throw.
