rounding off to the nearest tens
To round off a number to the nearest tens, we look at the digit at the ones place.
If the digit at the ones place is less than 5, keep the tens place digit as it is and
replace the ones place digit with 0.
If the digit at the ones place is 5 or greater than 5, increase the tens place digit
by 1 and replace the ones place digit with 0.
example 1: Round off 624 to the nearest tens.
Solution: H t O H t O Nearer to 620 than 630
6 2 4 6 2 0
620 624 630
4 < 5
624 620
624 rounded off to the nearest tens is 620.
example 2: Round off 3765 to the nearest tens.
Solution: th H t O th H t O Moving forward to 3770
3 7 6 5 3 7 7 0
3760 3765 3770
5 = 5
3765 3770 Note
3765 rounded off to the nearest tens is 3770. If a number is exactly between two
tens, it is always rounded to higher tens.
rounding off to the nearest Hundreds
When we round off a number to the nearest hundreds, we look for the digit at the
tens place.
If the digit at the tens place is less than 5, keep the hundreds place digit as it is
and replace the tens and ones places digits by 0.
If the digit at the tens place is 5 or greater than 5, increase the hundreds place
digit by 1 and replace the tens and the ones places digits by 0.
example 3: Round off 8249 to the nearest hundreds.
Solution: Nearer to 8200 than 8300
th H t O th H t O
8 2 4 9 8 2 0 0
8200 8249 8300
4 < 5
8249 8200
8249 rounded off to the nearest hundreds is 8200.
