Data
The information collected in the form of numerical figures is called data. By presenting
it in an organised way, meaningful information can be gathered from it.
Organising Data
Data can be organised in a table using tally marks which is a quick way of keeping
track of numbers or observations in groups of five.
We use vertical line(s) (|) to represent tally marks. We draw one vertical line (|)
for every observation (number). Upto four observations we draw four vertical lines
and the fifth observation is represented by a line runs diagonally over the previous
vertical four lines.

Look at the following table. It represents class IV students who like different fruits.
Fruits name Tally marks Number of students
Apple |||| 4
Mango 10
Banana ||| 8
Orange | 6
Papaya |||| 4
Pineapple ||| 3
Now, consider the following questions and their answers by observing the above table.
1. How many students like banana? ________________
8
2. Which fruit is liked most by the students? ________________
Mango
3. Which fruit is liked least by the students? ________________
Pineapple
4. Which fruits are liked equally? ________________
Apple and Papaya
Example: A group of children went to the zoo with the class teacher. After visiting
the zoo, the children were asked about their favourite animal and their responses
were noted down as given here:

Zebra Bear Elephant Tiger Monkey Lion Lion Tiger
Tiger Tiger Lion Monkey Zebra Monkey Tiger Elephant
Elephant Bear Tiger Lion Tiger Monkey Bear Lion
