                                   Learning by Doing




              Objective: Understanding bar graphs with the help of an abacus.

              Materials Required:   An abacus with 4 spikes and beads of four different
                                       colours.
              Prodcedure:


                     Š  Divide the class into groups of 4 students.
                     Š  Ask the group to  collect information on favourite sports  of  their  school or  society
                      friends. (It can be asked in advance for data collection.)
                     Š  Take an  abacus  and  some beads  according  to  their  favourite sports.  Let the  sports
                      be:  Badminton (blue  beads),  football  (red  beads),  basketball  (yellow beads)  and

                      cricket (green beads).
                     Š  Put a bead for each friend’s choice in the rod.




















                     Š  Observe which  colour tower is  the  tallest.   The beads  tower will  represent  the
                      information about the favourite sports.
