addition of 5- and 6-digit numbers
In the previous class, we have learnt the addition of 4-digit numbers. Let us extend
our learning to 5 and 6-digit numbers.
Madhu and Megha went to a zoo.
Madhu: Wow! There are so many animals and beautiful
plants.
Megha: Do you know India is one of the world’s richest
countries in biological diversity? About 81,000 species
of fauna and 47,000 species of flora have been found
in our country so far.
Madhu: Oh! Then how many species of flora and fauna are altogether found in India?
Megha: There are around 1,28,000 species of flora and fauna found in India.
Madhu: How do you calculate so fast?
Megha: With the help of addition. 81,000 + 47,000 = 1,28,000. This is the addition
of two 5-digit numbers.
addition of 5- and 6-digit numbers without regrouping
Let us understand it with the help of examples.
example 1: Add 32,475 and 24,312.
Solution: Arrange the digits of given numbers in the place value columns and add
the numbers starting from the ones place.
Step 1: Add the ones. 5 ones + 2 ones = 7 ones tth th H t O
Write 7 in the ones column. 3 2 4 7 5
Step 2: Add the tens. 7 tens + 1 ten = 8 tens + 2 4 3 1 2
Write 8 in the tens column. 5 6 7 8 7
