                            Step 4: Subtract the thousands.
                                       3 thousands – 1 thousand = 2 thousands

Write 2 in the thousands column.
Step 5: Subtract the ten thousands.

                                       9 ten thousands – 2 ten thousands = 7 ten thousands
Write 7 in the ten thousands column.

                            Step 6: Subtract the lakhs.
                                       7 lakhs – 4 lakhs = 3 lakhs

Write 3 in the lakhs column.
                            Thus, 7,93,567 – 4,21,434 = 3,72,133.

subtraction of 5- and 6-digit numbers with regrouping (borrowing)

We know that, when the digit at any place in the minuend is smaller than the digit

at the same place in the subtrahend, we borrow 1 from the next higher place and
regroup with the digit at that place in the minuend.

We use the same process to subtract 5 and 6-digit numbers.

              example 3: Subtract 34,164 from 71,229. tth th H t O

Solution: Write the smaller number below the larger 6 11 1 12
                            number in the place value columns. 7 1 2 2 9
                            Step 1: Subtract the ones. – 3 4 1 6 4

                                       9 ones – 4 ones = 5 ones 3 7 0 6 5

Step 2: Subtract the tens. Since 2 tens < 6 tens,
so, borrow 1 hundred and regroup in tens.

                                       1 hundred + 2 tens = 10 tens + 2 tens = 12 tens

                                       Then, 12 tens – 6 tens = 6 tens
                            Step 3: Subtract the hundreds. 1 hundred – 1 hundred = 0 hundreds

Step 4: Subtract the thousands. Since 1 thousand < 4 thousands,

so, borrow 1 ten thousand and regroup in thousands.
                                       1 ten thousand + 1 thousand = 10 thousands + 1 thousand

                                                                            = 11 thousands
                                       Then, 11 thousands – 4 thousands = 7 thousands

Step 5: Subtract the ten thousands.
                                       6 ten thousands – 3 ten thousands = 3 ten thousands

                                       Thus, 71,229 – 34,164 = 37,065.
