              ProPerties of subtraCtion

Just like addition, subtraction has some properties too.

              1. If we subtract zero from any number, the answer is the number itself.
                  example: 54,897 – 0 = 54,897 and 6,58,125 – 0 = 6,58,125

              2. When we subtract 1 from a number, we get the predecessor of that number.
                  example: 34,512 – 1 = 34,511 and 3,84,251 – 1 = 3,84,250
              3. When we subtract a number from itself, the answer is zero.

                  example: 23,200 – 23,200 = 0 and 9,99,999 – 9,99,999 = 0

              exPloring subtraCtion

We can subtract a number from another one in different ways. Let’s see some of them.

              example: 258 – 143 = ?
                                  Method 1 Method 2
By splitting only the smaller number using By splitting both the numbers using the
                the place values place values

                               258 – 143 = ? 258 – 143 = ?

                               100 40 3
                Step 1: 258 – 100 = 158 200 50 8 100 40 3
                Step 2: 158 – 40 = 118 Step 1: 200 – 100 = 100
                Step 3: 118 – 3 = 115 Step 2: 50 – 40 = 10

                Also, we can have: Step 3: 8 – 3 = 5
                    –3 –10 –10 –10 –10 –100 Step 4: 100 + 10 + 5 = 115

                115 118 128 138 148 158 258 So, 258 – 143 = 115
                So, 258 – 143 = 115
