              lattice Multiplication

We can also find the product of two numbers by using lattice multiplication.

Finding the products using the lattice multiplication is a fun! It is a very interesting

method. We have already learned lattice multiplication in our previous class. Let us

              learn further:

              Multiplying by 1-Digit number

example 1: Find 73 × 4 by the lattice multiplication.
                                                                                        7 3 Multiplicand
              Solution: Draw a 2 × 1 table as 73 × 4 has 2-digit and
                                                                                                    4 Multiplier
1-digit numbers respectively, and follow the

                            given steps:
                                                                                                       7 3
Step 1: Write the two numbers on the top and side of
                                                                                                                     4
                                      the table as shown.

Step 2: Draw the diagonal in each box as shown. 7 3

Step 3: Multiply 3 by 4, and write the product in the box 1 4
                                                                                                                 2
below 3 as shown. (write the ones digit in the

lower triangle and the tens place digit in the 2 7 1 3

                                      upper triangle) 8 2 4

Step 4: Multiply 7 by 4, and write the product same

                                      as before.
Step 5: Add the numbers of boxes 7 3 Note
                                                                                   2 1 Use regrouping
diagonally, as shown. 8 2 4 while adding
                                                                               2 the digits.
The answer is read from left 8+1=9 2
                                      to right. Product = 292.

                                      Thus, 73 × 4 = 292

              example 2: Find 143 × 7 by the lattice multiplication. 1 4 3

              Solution: Here, we have to multiply a 3-digit number 0 2 2 7

                             by a 1-digit number, so, we draw a 3 × 1 1 =1 =10 7 8 1 1
                                                                                                      0
table as shown and proceed further as above. 0+ Carry forward Carry forward
                                                                                                   1
                                                                                           1
                                                                                               8+2=
                            Thus, 143 × 7 = 1001 7+2+
