                                   Learning by Doing

Objective: To reinforce the concept of the distributive property of
                            multiplication over addition.

Materials required: Grid papers, some colourful bindis and a cello
                                        tap.
              procedure:

Š Divide the class into pairs and invite them one by one.

Š Tell the students to take grid papers.

Š Ask one student to put some red bindis to show 3 × 5 on a grid paper.

Š Ask the other student to put some green bindis to show 3 × 4 on a grid
                      paper.
Š Then tell the students to count the number of bindis put on the grid papers.

                                           

                                           

                                    Student 1: 3 × 5 = 15 Student 2: 3 × 4 = 12
                                                           Total = 15 + 12 = 27

Š Now, ask them to join both grids by using cello tape as shown below and

                      observe the arrangement.
Š Count the total number of bindis.

                                           

                                           

                                           

                                               3 × (5 + 4) = 3 × 9 = 27
                       Ask what they observe.

                       From the above presentation, we can see 3 × 5 + 3 × 4 = 3 × (5 + 4)

                       or 3 × (5 + 4) = 3 × 5 + 3 × 4 27 27

Š Repeat the above activity with different pairs till the time permits and also by
taking different numbers of columns and rows for the grid.
